History of the Balmoral Highland Dancing Society Inc.

Established in May of 1949 by Una Gales (nee Smith) and her Mother, the first class in Wangaratta had about twenty pupils. Within a few short years there were classes at Benalla, Yarrawonga, Myrtleford and Albury. Many local competitions were held and the club’s first venture onto the State Open platform was a trip for 30 parents and children to Maryborough Highland gathering on New Year’s Day in 1950.

Balmoral Highland Dancing Competitions

The Balmoral Highland Dancing Society Inc runs a number of local competitions, which are open to dancers from within the club to enter. Local competitions include Orange and Green Day (Irish Workshop); Local Preparation Competition and Workshop One in Wangaratta; Local Preparation Competition and Workshop Two in Youanmite and Lillian Harris Memorial Reel Party (Set Workshop) in Wangaratta.

Open competitions, which are open for all Victorian Scottish Union registered dancers within Victoria to enter and are held at Wangaratta; the annual Wangaratta Open; Wangaratta A & P Show; Benalla A & P Show; Euroa A & P Show and the Beechworth Celtic Festival.

All competitions are run to Victorian Scottish Union Regulations and Victorian Scottish Union qualified judges who are appointed by the Victorian Scottish Union Dancing Committee adjudicate them.
